Tom Hanks plays a Congressman from Texas in the 1980's who snowballs an effort to help the Afghan fighters beat their Soviet invaders in what would be a key battle in helping to end the Cold War. It's a film based on a true story, and it's extremely well written. The script is fast, witty, and smart. This aspect is really highlighted by Philip Seymour Hoffman's outstanding (supporting) performance as a CIA agent helping the Congressman make the right moves. The only problem I had with this movie is its pace is just as quick as its witty banter, and they could have certainly slowed down for a second and established the story a bit more. |

Tom Hanks stars in one of the better movies to come out this year as a Texas Congressman who helps to send funds to Afghan fighters to take on the Soviets. I think I enjoyed this more than most since I am quite the political junkie but the light-hearted and clever banter will keep anyone entertained. Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays a CIA specialist and might be the best single character in any movie this year! Hanks is great as always and Julia Roberts role is much smaller than expected. Although its rather short, its a great political comedy. |
